Protocol Notice: Assistance for Foreign Nationals impacted by COVID-19 Programme
A programme to assist foreign nationals in serious hardship was announced on 16 June by Foreign Minister, Rt Hon Winston Peters and Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, Poto Williams.
The Assistance for Foreign Nationals impacted by COVID-19 Programme will provide temporary, in-kind assistance to eligible people to help meet basic needs such as food and accommodation. The Programme will run for three months from 1 July 2020 and is designed to provide short-term assistance until recipients find a means of supporting themselves in New Zealand or are able to return home.
The Programme will be administered by the Department of Internal Affairs and delivered by a community-based non-government organisation. Further detail on how the fund will be administered will be available closer to implementation.
Non- resident foreign nationals should be seeking to return home if they cannot support themselves, and should still contact their embassy, high commission or consulate for assistance in the first instance, including for repatriation options.
